Commissioned into the Indian Navy on September 2, 2022, the carrier was constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited under the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier programme.
Named after India’s first aircraft carrier that was commissioned in 1961, the new INS Vikrant symbolizes a generational leap in design, scale, and technological capability. With a displacement of around 45,000 tonnes and a length of approximately 262 metres, the vessel is capable of operating nearly 30 aircraft. These include MiG-29K fighter jets along with advanced helicopters such as MH-60R and Kamov variants.
Advanced Technology and Naval Strength
INS Vikrant uses a STOBAR configuration, which allows aircraft to take off using a ski-jump and land with the help of arrestor wires. Powered by four gas turbines, the carrier can reach speeds exceeding 28 knots, making it a formidable presence in open waters. More than 75 percent of its components are sourced domestically, including specialized steel, propulsion systems, aviation facilities, and combat management systems.
The carrier is equipped with modern sensors, advanced command-and-control infrastructure, and layered air defence mechanisms. These features significantly enhance India’s blue-water navy capability, enabling long-duration air operations at sea and strengthening maritime security across the Indian Ocean Region.
