According to “Female First UK,” the filmmaker and his wife Michele were discovered dead at their Los Angeles home on December 14. Their 34-year-old son Nick, who has been candid about his battles with addiction, is now in jail after being accused with the double murder.

Since his son Cameron Douglas battled addiction for years, Douglas also had drug difficulties in his family. The actor has said that he connected with the filmmaker of The Princess Bride because of their common struggle.

The actor remarked, “With this terrible tragedy, we’re realizing how much pressure he was dealing with in his personal life with his son,” on the CBS News TV program “Rob Reiner: Scenes from a Life.” My son had likewise struggled with drugs. I’m glad to report that he has overcome them and is leading a successful life. We did discuss it a lot, as well as what parents can and cannot do. Despite all that was going on behind the scenes, this guy always tried his hardest.

The Oscar winner said he also identified with Reiner because they both grew up in the shadow of their renowned fathers—Reiner is the son of comedian/actor Carl Reiner, and Douglas is the son of Spartacus star Kirk Douglas—according to “Female First UK.”

“Well, my experience watching him was that I could never be the man that my father was,” the actor said. He is capable of anything. He was Spartacus, after all. It looks you in the face once you enter the same industry. Are you as hilarious as your father, Rob?I believe it also contributed to his power and persistence, and Rob’s endurance isn’t really discussed enough.

Reiner’s Misery co-star Kathy Bates also paid tribute to him in the TV special, comparing the storyline of the Stephen King adaption to that of Frank Capra’s iconic 1946 film “It’s a Wonderful Life,” as it completely changed the course of her life.

“If I hadn’t done Misery, it would be like George Bailey from ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ going back and seeing what his life would have been like if he hadn’t been there,” she added. I’ve always wanted to be an actor, and I don’t believe I could have achieved that goal in such a spectacular and dramatic manner without Rob.

She went on to say, “Rob changed my life, and I wouldn’t be sitting in front of you now if he hadn’t.”
