Marriage – Halle Berry Confirms Engagement to Van Hunt
Marriage – Oscar-winning actor Halle Berry has officially addressed long-standing speculation about her relationship status, confirming that she and singer-songwriter Van Hunt are engaged. The announcement came during her recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she clarified rumors that had circulated about a supposed rejected proposal.

Berry Clears Up Proposal Misunderstanding
Speaking candidly on the late-night program, Berry explained that reports suggesting she had turned down Hunt’s marriage proposal were inaccurate. She said there had been confusion surrounding the situation, but emphasized that she had not refused him.
According to Berry, the couple simply has not set a wedding date yet. She made it clear that she accepted the proposal and is open to marriage, putting an end to speculation that she had declined the offer. During the show, she also displayed her engagement ring, prompting a playful exchange with host Jimmy Fallon.
Her comments followed remarks Hunt made earlier in 2025, when he revealed in an interview that he had proposed and was waiting for an answer. At the time, he suggested the proposal was “on hold,” encouraging lighthearted public support for his case.
A Relationship Built Over Time
Berry and Hunt first connected in 2020, at a time when much of the world was navigating lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their bond developed largely through virtual conversations before they were able to spend time together in person.
In September 2020, Berry publicly acknowledged their relationship on social media, sharing a photo of herself wearing Hunt’s tour merchandise. Since then, the couple has appeared together at public events and has spoken openly about their partnership.
Over the years, Berry has described Hunt as a stabilizing presence in her life. At a public celebration honoring Black cinema and television, she referred to him as “the love of my life,” crediting him with offering unwavering support.
Past Marriages and a New Perspective
Both Berry and Hunt bring previous marriage experiences into their current relationship. Berry was married to former baseball player David Justice from 1993 to 1997, to musician Eric Benet from 2001 to 2005, and to actor Olivier Martinez from 2013 to 2016. Hunt has also been married before.
Berry has acknowledged that her earlier marriages shaped her outlook on commitment. She noted that tying the knot is not about proving the strength of their bond. Instead, she views marriage as a meaningful step they may choose to take because it feels right for them now.
In interviews, she has expressed that while marriage is not necessary to validate their love, it is something they may pursue as a personal expression of their commitment. She has also said that, in hindsight, Hunt feels like the partner she was meant to marry.
Family Life and Public Appearances
Berry is a mother of two children. She shares her daughter Nahla with model Gabriel Aubry and her son Maceo with Olivier Martinez. Hunt has been present in family moments as well, including a lighthearted “commitment ceremony” that Berry once described.
In a previous television interview, she recounted how her young son conducted an impromptu ceremony in the back seat of a car, jokingly declaring the couple married. While not legally binding, Berry described the moment as symbolic and heartfelt.
In recent years, the pair have frequently appeared together at industry events, often speaking warmly about one another. In a 2024 interview, Berry referred to Hunt as her “person,” saying it took time for her to find a relationship that felt truly aligned.
With the engagement now confirmed, the couple appears to be moving forward at their own pace, choosing to define their commitment on their terms rather than according to outside expectations.
