Javed Akhtar discussed the purported video and provided an explanation in a lengthy statement posted on his X, which was once Twitter, on Thursday.

“A phony video that purports to show my computer-generated image with a topi on my head and that I have finally turned to God is in circulation,” he stated. It is garbage.

“I am seriously considering reporting this to the cyber police and ultimately dragging the person responsible for this fake news and those few who forward it to the court for damaging my reputation and credibility,” he said.

Journalist Saurabh Dwivedi mediated a high-profile public discussion between Islamic scholar Mufti Shamail Nadwi and Javed Akhtar titled “Does God Exist?” at the Constitution Club of India a few days ago in New Delhi. Known for his secular and atheistic beliefs, Akhtar questioned established theistic reasoning by posing questions about reason, faith, and proof.

Mufti Nadwi, who received his education in ancient Islamic research, supported theistic viewpoints by basing his claims on religious precepts, logic, and philosophical reasoning. The discussion swiftly gained widespread attention on the internet, eliciting strong responses from both believers and agnostics as well as secular intellectuals on social media and commenting sites. While some viewers thought Akhtar’s secular argument was convincing, others praised the mufti’s rebuttals and praised his performance. In India’s heterogeneous culture, the argument rekindled larger discussions about religion, reason, and public discourse.

Earlier, Javed Akhtar remembered Zoya Akhtar’s birth day by writing a loving birthday card for his daughter, a filmmaker. Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar are Javed Akhtar’s two children from his marriage to Honey Irani. In 1984, he wed Shabana Azmi, an actress who had won a National Award.
