Despite their lack of popularity, Nawazuddin Siddiqui asserts that independent films are “like classical art.”

For many years, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has been a leading advocate for independent film. The actor has been in a number of highly regarded movies, including Photograph and Gangs of Wasseypur. He bemoaned in a recent interview the lack of recognition and box office performance of independent films in India, which find it difficult to get momentum while competing with major commercial blockbusters.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui said, “I’ll continue doing independent cinema,” in an interview with PTI. Using a certain kind of mass film to balance it is crucial. If that occurs, I believe it will be disastrous (independent cinema fading away). It should, in my opinion, keep being created. It is stated that the reason our traditional forms—dance, music, etc.—have never gained popularity is because so few people can comprehend them.

On Juggling Independent and Commercial Films, Nawazuddin Siddiqui

The actor, who has acted in both commercial and independent films, pointed out that while mainstream films are significant, independent films are analogous to traditional art forms in that they are meant for a small audience. “It is a different matter if you want to do it for the general public and if you want to do it artistically,” the actor said. Certain components must be included if you want to perform it for the general public, yet classical and pure art have never been created with the general public in mind.

According to the actor, starring in major motion pictures increases his visibility, which in turn helps his smaller films get some recognition. The largest benefit of large-scale films is their increased viewership; thus, if small-scale films get even 5% of the audience, it represents the highest benefit.

New Work by Nawazuddin Siddiqui

The actor is now getting praise for his portrayal as a vampire in Thamma, a horror comedy directed by Aditya Sarpotdar. Nawaz portrays the antagonist in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe movie, which also stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna. When the movie was released on Diwali, it received excellent reviews and performed well at the box office.
