In partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Eco Tech, Sweden, the business has been awarded an Indo-Swedish grant to conduct a pre-pilot Technology Feasibility study for Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU).

In a statement released on Wednesday, the business stated “The company becomes the first cement company to receive an Indo-Swedish grant for a pre-pilot Technology Feasibility study for Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Eco Tech, Sweden” .

The research emphasizes the shift from traditional carbon storage to a circular carbon economy that lowers emissions and makes new green fuels and materials possible. It focuses on developing scalable, sustainable, and industry-ready CO2 collection and utilization systems.

As part of the initiative, Ambuja Cements intends to use collected CO₂ to convert it into products like green methanol or calcium carbonate using green hydrogen routes.

This strategy supports a circular approach that is good for the environment and the economy by highlighting a change from just collecting and storing carbon to reusing it for industrial use.

The project will evaluate the technological and financial feasibility of carbon capture from cement operations, one of the world’s most difficult and difficult-to-abate industrial sectors. In order to enable low-emission alternatives across businesses, carbon dioxide gathered at the facility will be directed toward the production of green methanol or the conversion of materials.

“Getting this grant reaffirms our dedication to responsible innovation and international partnerships,” said Vinod Bahety, CEO of the Adani Group’s Cement Business. Our unique collaboration with IIT Bombay and Eco Tech, Sweden will expedite climate-resilient, value-creating solutions, and CCU is a critical lever to redefine sustainable building. By expanding the use of alternative fuels and raw materials, integrating renewable energy, and taking additional steps, we are moving closer to our net-zero plan. The last phase in achieving our goal of net-zero will be CCU.

He went on to say “With TNFD aligned disclosures from FY’26, biodiversity initiatives, world’s first commercial deployment of Coolbrook’s RDHTM technology, Agentic AI-driven operations, and by leveraging the Adani Group’s integrated ecosystem, we aim to create superior stakeholder value and support India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.”

Utilizing cutting-edge CO₂ capture and mineralization technologies, the partnership with IIT Bombay’s National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage aims to develop scalable and affordable solutions for challenging industries like cement.

In order to make the process more sustainable and cost-effective, Eco Tech, Sweden will help the endeavor by optimizing energy consumption, recovering waste heat, and incorporating renewable power and heat into the CCU model.

The company’s net-zero plan, which has been approved by the SBTi, gains pace thanks to this award.

By using Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic Heater technology commercially, Ambuja is also speeding up low-carbon production.

With 376 MW of waste heat recovery systems and 1 GW of captive solar-wind capacity, the corporation is increasing its use of renewable energy. As the cement industry’s first user of TNFD in India, it is also enhancing nature-positive results.

In order to increase productivity, resilience, and long-term sustainable emission reduction, Ambuja Cements is moving closer to 30% TSR and integrating Agentic AI across its operations. The firm hopes to spearhead the shift to a circular carbon economy in India and throughout the world by incorporating CCU with its current sustainability-driven projects.

The business emphasized that by taking a solution-driven approach to lowering emissions and creating new opportunities for green materials and fuels, the initiative represents a revolutionary breakthrough in the cement industry’s decarbonization goal.

The ninth-largest building materials solutions company in the world, Ambuja Cements Limited is an important component of the diverse Adani Portfolio, which is the fastest-growing portfolio of sustainable companies in the nation.
