Bihar:Rabri Devi received a new home 1.6 kilometers away; what does this suggest about Bihar’s political message in 2025

Bihar: Political repercussions have been felt in Patna as a result of the Bihar government’s decision to move Rabri Devi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, from her previous house at 10 Circular Road to a new official residence on Hardinge Road.

Observers said it is difficult to ignore the symbolism, despite the administration’s insistence that the action is only administrative.

The new bungalow’s features
Previously inhabited by Vinod Narayan Jha, Ramsurat Rai, Samim Akhtar, and Chandramohan Rai, the newly assigned mansion at 39 Hardinge Road is one of the city’s bigger ministerial residences. Six spacious bedrooms, a drawing and dining room, a hall, a separate office unit, staff quarters, and guard rooms are all included in the two-story home.

One of the property’s most distinctive characteristics is the garden, which is bordered by dahlias, jasmine, mogra, marigolds, and trees such as amaltas, ashoka, neem, peepal, gulmohar, mango, jamun, and oleander. Additionally, a kitchen garden is allowed.

Former residents observe that despite its size, the bungalow would seem insufficient for Rabri Devi’s bigger home, which includes her nine children and RJD chairman Lalu Prasad Yadav, but it would fit a typical political family.

Why the RJD believes the change is motivated by politics
The party immediately reacted to the order for Rabri Devi to leave the house she has lived in for years, calling it “an act of political vendetta.”

However, the JD(U) maintains that the allocation must adhere to the regulations.

“This is a recommended process. Residences are distributed by the Central Government based on status. A new home has been assigned for Rabri Devi, according to JD(U) national spokesman Rajeev Ranjan.

Neeraj Kumar, a spokesman for the JD(U), went on to say, “Lalu was caught up in the web of illusions.” Scams followed, and Lalu ended himself in prison as a consequence. He is now in need of a government bungalow.

The political significance of the 1.6-kilometer advance
Rabri Devi’s present house is situated immediately across from the Chief Minister’s mansion, a position that has always had political significance. The new bungalow, which is 1.6 kilometers further, represents a discernible change in perspective and closeness.

This is more than just an administrative move, according to political analysts. They point out that such a move hasn’t been made in over 20 years and is seen as a long-term signal.

Many people think that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is clearly putting political space between himself and the Lalu family, indicating that even if relations with the BJP deteriorate in the future, a return to the RJD fold is improbable.

The argument goes beyond the bungalow’s dimensions for Rabri Devi, who is now the Legislative Council’s Leader of the Opposition.

Bihar’s already complicated political equations have been further complicated by the move, which is assessed not just in square footage but also in distance and purpose.
