Bihar Politics – Nitish Kumar Signals Exit, Triggers Race for New CM

Bihar Politics – Bihar’s political landscape witnessed a dramatic development on Thursday when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar indicated his willingness to resign from the top post and shift to the Rajya Sabha. The announcement has sparked intense discussions within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) about who could take over the leadership of the state.

Possibility of BJP Leading the State Government

Sources familiar with the developments say the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which governs Bihar in alliance with Janata Dal (United), may nominate its own leader as chief minister for the first time. If this happens, it would mark a significant shift in the state’s political dynamics because the BJP has never previously placed its own leader in the chief minister’s office, even when it held the largest number of seats in the Bihar Assembly.

Senior party insiders suggest the leadership change is being carefully planned with the consent of alliance partners, and discussions are underway to ensure a smooth transition that maintains coalition stability.

Key BJP Leaders in Contention

Among the names being discussed most actively within the BJP is Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. Political observers note that Choudhary, who belongs to the Other Backward Classes category similar to Nitish Kumar, is seen as a strong contender due to his organisational experience and growing influence within the party.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai has also emerged as a possible candidate. Rai has long been considered a prominent face of the BJP in Bihar and enjoys strong support among sections of the party cadre.

Another leader being mentioned in internal discussions is Dilip Jaiswal, the state’s industries minister. Party sources indicate that his administrative experience and long association with the BJP could work in his favor if the leadership decides to look beyond the most obvious contenders.

JD(U) Names Also Under Consideration

While the BJP appears poised to claim the chief minister’s position, leaders from Janata Dal (United) are also part of the broader conversation about Bihar’s political future.

Among them is Nishant Kumar, the son of Nitish Kumar, whose potential entry into active politics has been the subject of speculation for some time. According to sources, Nishant had earlier been considered for a Rajya Sabha seat but reportedly expressed a preference to begin his political journey within Bihar rather than through the upper house of Parliament.

Another JD(U) leader whose name has surfaced is Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, the state’s water resources minister and a senior figure within the party.

Proposal for Two Deputy Chief Ministers

To maintain balance within the ruling alliance, discussions are also taking place regarding a possible restructuring of the government. Sources within the NDA suggest that if the BJP appoints the chief minister, the JD(U) could be offered two deputy chief minister positions.

Such an arrangement would mirror the existing structure in Bihar where Nitish Kumar served as chief minister with two BJP leaders as his deputies. Alliance leaders believe this formula could help preserve political equilibrium within the coalition.

A senior NDA leader indicated that this approach has already been informally discussed and could be implemented if the leadership transition moves forward.

Consideration of a Young Woman Leader

In a move that could signal the BJP’s emphasis on women’s representation in politics, party insiders say the leadership is also exploring the possibility of selecting a young woman leader with a clean public image.

According to sources, women voters played a decisive role in the NDA securing a two-thirds majority in the last Bihar Assembly elections. Choosing a woman for the chief minister’s position could therefore send a strong message about the party’s commitment to women’s empowerment while broadening its political appeal across communities.

Rajya Sabha Nominations Filed

Meanwhile, preparations for upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Bihar continued on Thursday. The BJP nominated National President Nitin Nabin and state unit general secretary Shivesh Kumar as its candidates.

Leaders from allied parties also filed their nominations, including Upendra Kushwaha and Union Minister Ramnath Thakur from the JD(U).

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was present during the nomination process and praised Nitish Kumar for his contribution to Bihar’s development over the years, highlighting the role he played in shaping the state’s governance and infrastructure.

With discussions continuing behind closed doors, Bihar now awaits a final decision on the next phase of its political leadership.
