IranConflict – UN Security Council Passes Resolution Condemning Iran Attacks

IranConflict – The United Nations Security Council has approved a resolution, backed by India and several other nations, that strongly condemns Iran for launching attacks on neighboring countries in the Middle East. The measure was adopted during a council meeting on Wednesday, reflecting growing international concern over the widening regional conflict.

Resolution Gains Broad Support in Security Council

The resolution received the backing of 13 out of the 15 members of the Security Council. Russia and China chose to abstain from the vote rather than exercise their veto power, allowing the resolution to pass. Their decision was notable, given their reservations about certain aspects of the draft text.

The document was supported by an extensive group of 135 co-sponsoring countries, indicating broad diplomatic backing. Observers noted that the abstentions by Moscow and Beijing highlighted the increasing diplomatic pressure faced by Tehran following its military actions in the region.

Attacks on Gulf Nations Spark Global Concern

The resolution criticizes Iran for launching strikes against several Gulf states and Jordan. The countries mentioned include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. The attacks, according to several council members, have intensified instability in the Middle East and disrupted global energy markets.

Many of these nations host key energy infrastructure and international transport hubs. As a result, the strikes have triggered concerns about economic ripple effects worldwide, particularly in energy supply chains.

Russia Explains Abstention Despite Objections

Russia’s representative explained that while Moscow considered the resolution unbalanced, it chose not to block the measure. According to the diplomat, Russia recognized that civilian populations and infrastructure in Gulf countries had suffered damage.

He noted that the consequences extended beyond military facilities, stating that ordinary citizens and essential infrastructure were affected by the escalation. For that reason, Russia refrained from using its veto despite disagreements with the wording of the resolution.

Competing Russian Draft Fails to Secure Support

During the same session, Russia presented an alternative resolution that called for an immediate halt to the escalation and condemned attacks on civilians and civilian facilities. However, the proposal did not identify any specific country responsible for the violence.

The competing draft failed to reach the required minimum of nine votes needed for adoption. China, Pakistan, Russia, and Somalia supported the proposal, while nine countries abstained. The United States and Latvia voted against it.

Because the resolution did not receive sufficient backing, the negative vote from the United States did not amount to a veto.

Resolution Calls for Immediate Halt to Iranian Attacks

The adopted resolution specifically demands that Iran stop all military strikes against the listed Middle Eastern countries. While the document focuses on Tehran’s actions, it does not directly address the earlier military operations conducted by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets, which had triggered the current cycle of hostilities.

Iran had expanded its retaliatory actions to several Gulf nations and Jordan, even though those countries were not directly involved in the earlier strikes. Some of the targeted states host US military installations, which analysts say may have influenced Tehran’s decision.

Gulf Nations Condemn Iranian Actions

Bahrain’s representative to the United Nations, Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, introduced the resolution and gathered an unusually high number of supporting countries. Addressing the council, he stated that the international community had firmly rejected what he described as hostile actions directed at sovereign nations.

Alrowaiei emphasized that Bahrain had not taken part in the initial US-Israel strikes on Iran but nevertheless became a target of Iranian attacks. He warned that such actions threatened regional stability and the safety of civilian populations.

Iran Criticizes Security Council Decision

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, strongly criticized the council’s decision. He argued that the resolution unfairly blamed Iran while ignoring what Tehran considers acts of aggression against it.

Iravani said the move undermined the credibility of the Security Council and questioned the impartiality of the process. He also objected to the United States presiding over the meeting, pointing out that Washington currently holds the council’s rotating presidency.

US and Israel Defend International Response

US representative Mike Waltz condemned the attacks on civilian and economic infrastructure across the Gulf region. He highlighted damage to ports, airports, energy facilities, hotels, and other key sites as evidence of the seriousness of the situation.

Waltz urged Iran to heed the message delivered through the resolution and the broader international response. Israel’s envoy, Danny Danon, also criticized Tehran’s actions, saying the attacks reflected desperation by Iran as global pressure increased.
