The ceremony is expected to take place at 1:30 pm, with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court administering the oath of office and secrecy. Once sworn in, Sandhu will officially begin his tenure overseeing the constitutional responsibilities attached to the post in Delhi.

Appointment Follows Administrative Reshuffle

Sandhu’s appointment comes as part of a broader set of administrative changes announced by Rashtrapati Bhavan. The current Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.

According to the official statement, Saxena will assume charge in Ladakh on Friday. The reshuffle also includes changes in other constitutional positions. Kavinder Gupta, who had been serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, has now been appointed as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.

Authorities stated that the appointments will come into effect from the dates on which the respective officials formally take charge of their new roles.

Diplomatic Career Spanning More Than Three Decades

Before entering public life in India’s political sphere, Taranjit Singh Sandhu built a long career in diplomacy. A member of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) since 1988, he spent more than thirty-five years serving India in several important international assignments.

One of the most prominent positions he held was India’s Ambassador to the United States, a role he served in from February 2020 until January 31, 2024. During that period, India and the United States witnessed growing strategic and economic cooperation, and Sandhu played a significant role in strengthening diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

Earlier in his career, Sandhu was involved in establishing India’s diplomatic presence in Ukraine. He worked as the head of the political and administrative wing at the Indian Embassy there, contributing to the development of India’s diplomatic operations in the region.

Key Assignments in Global Diplomatic Posts

Throughout his diplomatic career, Sandhu held several important assignments in different parts of the world. He served as First Secretary at the Embassy of India in Washington and later took on the role of Consul General of India in Frankfurt, Germany.

He also worked as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., a senior position that involved managing diplomatic coordination, bilateral engagement, and strategic discussions between India and the United States.

These assignments provided him with extensive experience in international diplomacy, policy coordination, and government administration, which are considered valuable for the responsibilities associated with the Lieutenant Governor’s office in Delhi.

Transition from Diplomacy to Politics

After completing his diplomatic service, Sandhu stepped into active politics. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party a few months before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

During the parliamentary elections, the BJP nominated him as its candidate from the Amritsar constituency in Punjab. In that contest, he faced Congress leader Gurjit Singh Aujla. Although the election marked his first major political campaign, it also highlighted his transition from a diplomatic career to a public role within India’s political landscape.

Educational Background

Sandhu completed his undergraduate studies at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later pursued higher education at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, obtaining a Master of Arts degree.

His academic background, combined with decades of diplomatic service, has shaped his understanding of governance, international relations, and administrative functioning.

With the oath ceremony scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, Sandhu will soon begin his responsibilities as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, marking a new chapter in his public service career.
