WomenEmpowerment – Stalin Highlights Welfare Measures Ahead of International Women’s Day
WomenEmpowerment – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin extended his greetings to women across the state ahead of International Women’s Day, which will be observed on Sunday. In his message issued on Saturday, the Chief Minister praised the determination and contributions of women in various sectors and reiterated his government’s commitment to improving their rights, welfare and economic independence. He said that the progress of women is closely linked to the overall development of society and remains an important focus of the state administration.

Focus on Women’s Role in Social Progress
In his message, Stalin acknowledged the growing role of women in shaping communities, workplaces and public life. He noted that women continue to contribute significantly to economic growth, social development and family wellbeing. According to the Chief Minister, ensuring equal opportunities for women in education, employment and decision-making is essential for a balanced and inclusive society.
He emphasised that strengthening women’s participation in public life is not only a social responsibility but also a vital component of sustainable development.
Legacy of the Dravidian Movement
Stalin also referred to the historical roots of gender equality within the Dravidian movement. He said the movement had consistently advocated social justice and equal rights for women. The Chief Minister highlighted the work of social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, who openly challenged patriarchal traditions and questioned social practices that limited women’s freedom.
Periyar’s writings and activism, including his well-known work examining the historical subjugation of women, helped spark wider discussions about dignity, equality and women’s rights. Stalin said these ideas played an important role in shaping progressive thinking in Tamil Nadu.
Karunanidhi’s Contribution to Legal Reforms
The Chief Minister also paid tribute to former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, noting that he carried forward these reformist principles through legislative and administrative action. According to Stalin, Karunanidhi’s government introduced several policies aimed at expanding opportunities for women.
Among the key measures were laws ensuring equal property rights for women and the introduction of reservations for women in government employment. These steps, Stalin said, opened new avenues for women to participate more actively in economic and social life.
Welfare Initiatives Under the Current Government
Highlighting the current administration’s approach, Stalin said the DMK government continues to follow the principles of inclusive development through what it describes as the “Dravidian Model” of governance. He stated that empowering women through access to education, financial security and mobility remains a major priority.
The Chief Minister listed several welfare programmes launched by the government to support women in Tamil Nadu. One of the most prominent initiatives is the Magalir Vidiyal Payanam scheme, which allows women to travel free of cost on government buses, making daily commuting easier and more affordable.
Another major initiative is the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, which provides financial assistance to women who are heads of families. The Pudhumai Penn programme has also been introduced to encourage girls to continue their education by offering financial incentives for higher studies.
Additional Schemes Supporting Women
Stalin also mentioned several other measures designed to improve women’s living conditions and opportunities. These include Thozhi hostels for working women, which provide safe accommodation for those employed in urban areas.
The state government has also introduced concessions in registration fees for properties registered in women’s names to encourage asset ownership. A free HPV vaccination programme has been launched for girls below 14 years of age as part of public health initiatives.
Other schemes include the Nannilam land ownership programme for Adi Dravidar and tribal women, as well as the appointment of women Odhuvars in temples, reflecting efforts to expand women’s participation in cultural and religious spaces.
Women at the Centre of Future Development
Looking ahead, Stalin said women would remain central to Tamil Nadu’s development plans. He expressed confidence that their leadership and participation would contribute significantly to the state’s economic progress and social advancement.
The Chief Minister reiterated that his government would continue implementing policies aimed at strengthening financial security, improving education access and expanding employment opportunities for women. He concluded by stating that the advancement of women is inseparable from the progress of Tamil Nadu, and empowering them will remain a priority for the state government in the years to come.
