Floods – Tropical Storm Triggers Major Flooding Across Queensland and Northern Territory

Floods –  Five people were safely rescued and dozens of hospital patients were relocated after intense rainfall caused significant flooding in parts of northern Australia. The severe weather has affected several areas of Queensland and the neighbouring Northern Territory, prompting authorities to issue multiple flood alerts and emergency warnings.

Heavy Rainfall Triggers Widespread Flood Alerts

Large sections of Queensland were placed under flood warnings on Saturday morning following persistent rain brought by a slow-moving tropical weather system. The storm made landfall on the state’s northeast coast on Friday afternoon and has continued to move inland.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the tropical low has been travelling westward across central Queensland. Weather experts warned that the system is expected to deliver additional heavy rainfall, raising the risk of sudden flash flooding in several river catchments.

Emergency services across the region remain on alert as authorities monitor rising river levels and rainfall forecasts.

Overnight Rescue Operations in Central Queensland

Emergency crews carried out multiple rescue operations overnight as floodwaters rapidly spread through parts of central Queensland. Reports indicated that five individuals were safely pulled from dangerous conditions after becoming trapped by rising water.

Among those rescued were three people who had abandoned a stranded vehicle and climbed onto a tree to escape fast-moving floodwaters. Rescue teams reached them in time and transported them to safety.

Local authorities have urged residents to avoid driving through flooded roads and to follow safety advisories as weather conditions remain unpredictable.

Major Flood Warning Issued for Katherine in Northern Territory

While Queensland deals with flooding linked to the tropical system, a separate weather event has triggered serious flood concerns in the Northern Territory.

Officials issued a major flood warning for the town of Katherine, located roughly 270 kilometers southeast of Darwin. Meteorologists reported that water levels in the Katherine River began rising rapidly on Saturday morning.

Data from monitoring stations showed the river had already exceeded the threshold for major flooding in central parts of the town. Forecasts suggest that river levels could continue to climb as rainfall persists.

Hospital Patients Moved as Precautionary Measure

Authorities took precautionary steps to protect vulnerable residents in Katherine as the flood risk increased. Twenty-one patients from Katherine Hospital were transferred to medical facilities in other areas on Friday.

The group included twenty pregnant women who were relocated to ensure they could receive uninterrupted medical care if the town becomes isolated by floodwaters.

Emergency planners said the evacuation was carried out early to avoid last-minute complications should transport routes be cut off.

Government Urges Residents to Follow Emergency Warnings

Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro travelled to Katherine on Friday evening to assess the situation and coordinate response efforts. During her visit, she emphasized the importance of residents following official instructions.

She urged people living in flood-prone areas to stay informed through emergency alerts and to take warnings seriously as water levels continue to rise.

Authorities are working with emergency services and local agencies to monitor conditions and prepare for possible evacuations if the situation worsens.

Earlier Severe Weather Warning for Queensland Coast

Earlier this week, meteorologists issued a severe weather alert warning that the approaching tropical system could bring intense rainfall to Queensland’s far northern coastline.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicted that the storm could affect a stretch of coastline roughly 350 kilometers long. Cities including Cairns, Port Douglas, and Cooktown were placed within the warning zone.

These coastal communities, home to an estimated 255,000 people, were advised to prepare for heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flash flooding as the system moved across the region.

Emergency authorities continue to track the storm’s progress while reminding residents to remain cautious and follow safety guidance until conditions stabilize.
