ElectionCommission – AI-Powered Voter Awareness Drive Ahead of Polls
ElectionCommission – The Election Commission of India is preparing to introduce artificial intelligence tools into its voter outreach efforts as four states, including Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry, head toward Assembly elections. The initiative marks a notable shift in how the poll authority communicates electoral information to the public.

Addressing Technology Misuse in Elections
Officials say the decision comes at a time when emerging digital technologies such as deepfakes and manipulated video content are increasingly being misused in political campaigns worldwide. Rather than allowing artificial intelligence to become a source of misinformation, the Commission plans to use the technology for public education and awareness.
The move reflects growing concerns about misleading digital content influencing voters. By encouraging responsible use of AI, the Commission aims to promote accurate information about the voting process and safeguard public trust in electoral systems.
Open Call for Creative Participation
Under the new plan, media agencies, filmmakers, digital creators and individuals have been invited to produce AI-generated videos centered on essential aspects of the election process. The themes include the functioning of Electronic Voting Machines, the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail system, ethical voting practices and the importance of casting ballots freely without inducement or fear.
All proposed scripts will undergo scrutiny by the Election Department before production begins. Authorities have clarified that the content must remain neutral and strictly non-political, ensuring that the awareness material does not favor any party or candidate.
Integration with SVEEP Programme
The campaign will operate through the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation programme, widely known as SVEEP, which serves as the Commission’s primary voter outreach platform. Traditionally, SVEEP has relied on short films, public service advertisements, songs and jingles to deliver its message.
This marks the first time artificial intelligence has been formally incorporated into the programme’s content creation strategy. Officials believe the technology can offer fresh and innovative ways to explain complex electoral procedures in a simplified manner.
Language, Accessibility and Funding
The Election Department has laid out specific guidelines for the format of submissions. Videos must follow a conversational and easy-to-understand style so that voters from different backgrounds can grasp the information clearly. Productions may be created in Tamil or English. However, Tamil-language videos must include English subtitles to broaden accessibility.
Each approved project will receive financial assistance of Rs 50,000, according to officials. The Commission has also indicated that, alongside AI-driven material, it intends to collaborate with well-known personalities to expand the campaign’s reach.
Multi-Platform Distribution Strategy
Once completed, the awareness videos will be screened across multiple platforms, including cinema halls, television channels and social media networks. The aim is to ensure that the information reaches diverse sections of society, from urban audiences to rural communities.
Election authorities believe the integration of artificial intelligence into voter education could make outreach efforts more engaging, particularly for young and first-time voters. By presenting information in a format familiar to digital-native audiences, the Commission hopes to strengthen informed participation in the democratic process.
With Assembly elections approaching, the initiative signals an effort to combine technology and public communication in a measured and transparent manner. Officials view it as a step toward modernizing voter education while maintaining strict neutrality and credibility in the electoral framework.
