Mexico: A passenger train derails on the Tehuantepec Railway’s Isthmus, killing 13 and injuring 98

Mexico: According to the Mexican Navy Secretariat, a passenger train on the interoceanic corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railway collided with an accident on the Salina Cruz-Coatzacoalcos line in Mexico on Sunday, resulting in at least 13 fatalities and 98 injuries.

Around 250 people were on board the Line Z train when the disaster occurred, according to a statement released by the Mexican Navy, which is in charge of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

The remaining passengers suffered non-serious injuries, while 36 of the 98 wounded are still undergoing medical care. It was stated that 139 people were not in danger.

“As a result of this accident, 139 people are out of danger, 98 were injured, of whom 36 are receiving hospital medical attention and the rest have no serious injuries, and unfortunately, 13 people lost their lives,” the statement said.

The Navy said in a statement that the families of those who perished in what it called a terrible tragedy have our sincere sympathies. Additionally, it reiterated its commitment to operating in a responsible, open, and law-abiding manner while offering prompt support to anyone impacted.

“The Secretariat of the Navy expresses its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident, and also reaffirms its commitment to acting with the utmost responsibility, transparency, and adherence to the law, providing immediate support to those affected,” the statement continued.

Following the mishap, 360 navy troops, 20 vehicles, four ground ambulances, three air ambulances, and a tactical drone were sent to help emergency response, according to the Navy, as part of comprehensive search-and-rescue efforts.

In order to ascertain the cause of the accident and guarantee assistance for the victims and their families, authorities further stated that they will continue to collaborate with pertinent agencies.

The Secretary of the Navy and the Deputy Secretary of Human Rights of the Secretariat of the Interior were instructed by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to visit the disaster scene and personally care for the impacted families after it happened.

Additionally, she said that the wounded passengers are being treated at the IMSS-Wellbeing hospitals in Juchitan and Ixtepec, as well as the IMSS hospitals in Matias Romero and Salina Cruz, and she gave the delegates there instructions to help with relief and medical operations.

“Unfortunately, 13 persons lost their lives in the Interoceanic Train catastrophe, while 98 others were hurt, five of them critically, according to the Navy Secretariat. The wounded are being treated in IMSS-Wellbeing hospitals in Juchitan and Ixtepec, as well as IMSS facilities in Matias Romero and Salina Cruz. In addition to the IMSS and IMSS-Wellbeing representatives, I have instructed the Secretary of the Navy and the Deputy Secretary of Human Rights of the Secretariat of the Interior to visit the location and personally visit with the families. The activities will be coordinated by the Secretary of the Interior. I am grateful to the Governor of Oaxaca and his staff for their help.
