Incident Reported From Penro Area
The incident came to light on Wednesday morning when the girl was found hanging from the ceiling of her family home in the Penro area of Howrah. Family members alerted neighbors and authorities soon after discovering her body. Police later confirmed that the death is being investigated as a suicide linked to an alleged molestation incident that occurred the previous evening.
Officials stated that civic volunteers in West Bengal are appointed by the state government on a contractual basis to assist police personnel, mainly with duties such as traffic regulation and crowd management. The accused in this case was serving in such a role.
Alleged Molestation During Local Festival Visit
According to police sources and statements from residents, the girl had traveled with her mother to the nearby Amta area on Tuesday evening to attend a Kali Puja celebration at her maternal uncle’s residence. Her mother reportedly works as a domestic worker at the house of the accused.
Investigators said that Laltu Mukhopadhyay had also arrived in the Amta area separately that evening. During the festival, he allegedly encountered the girl and behaved inappropriately toward her. Authorities further stated that the accused is suspected of sexually molesting the girl when she went to use a toilet during the event.
Police officials indicated that the alleged incident deeply affected the girl emotionally. After returning home to Penro later that night, she reportedly remained distressed and withdrawn.
Family Files Complaint With Police
Following the girl’s death, her family approached the Penro police station and lodged a formal First Information Report against the accused. The complaint detailed the alleged molestation and its suspected link to the girl’s suicide.
Police began an investigation soon after receiving the complaint. Officers visited the residence to begin initial procedures, including arranging for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death and gather evidence related to the case.
Residents Protest and Demand Arrest
Tensions rose in the locality as news of the incident spread. Several residents gathered outside the victim’s home and staged protests, expressing anger over the alleged assault and the circumstances that led to the girl’s death.
According to witnesses, demonstrators surrounded police personnel and initially prevented them from taking the body away for post-mortem examination. The protesters insisted that the accused must be arrested immediately before any further procedures were carried out.
Local residents also voiced concerns about safety and accountability, especially since the accused was associated with civic duties linked to law enforcement support.
Police Arrest the Accused
Amid the growing public pressure, police launched a search for the accused civic volunteer. Officials confirmed that Laltu Mukhopadhyay was later located and arrested from the same locality.
Authorities said he will face legal proceedings based on the allegations made in the complaint and the findings of the investigation. Police also assured residents that the case will be handled according to legal procedures and that all evidence will be examined carefully.
The post-mortem examination of the victim’s body is expected to assist investigators in determining the circumstances surrounding the death. Further investigation is ongoing.
