Ukraine – Zelenskyy Secures New Air Defence and Energy Support

Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed appreciation to the United States and Germany for reinforcing Kyiv’s air defence capabilities as the conflict with Russia continues. His remarks came shortly after returning to the Ukrainian capital following two days of high-level talks at the Munich Security Conference.

Ukraine air defence support

Speaking in a video address shared with the public, Zelenskyy described the conference as intensive but productive. He indicated that fresh support packages for Ukraine are in progress, with a particular focus on strengthening the country’s missile defence systems to counter ballistic threats.

Focus on Missile Defence and Strategic Talks

According to Zelenskyy, discussions in Munich centred on securing additional missiles for air defence systems. He confirmed that the matter was raised during his meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. While specific details were not disclosed, the Ukrainian leader said Kyiv is hopeful that recently discussed agreements will translate into tangible assistance.

Air defence has become increasingly critical for Ukraine as missile and drone strikes continue to target key infrastructure. By seeking advanced systems and ammunition, Ukrainian authorities aim to protect cities and strategic facilities from further damage.

Zelenskyy also noted that cooperation with international partners remains active and ongoing. He stressed that Ukraine is maintaining constant dialogue with allied governments to address evolving security challenges.

German-Ukrainian Drone Production Expands

During his visit to Munich, Zelenskyy formally presented a joint German-Ukrainian initiative aimed at manufacturing drones for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The production line, developed in partnership with Germany, has already undergone battlefield testing, according to the president.

He described the project as incorporating advanced technology, including artificial intelligence capabilities, and said it would continue to expand through broader European cooperation. Plans include joint development programs and financial mechanisms designed to strengthen defence manufacturing across the region.

The initiative is part of Ukraine’s broader effort to scale up domestic defence production while relying on strategic partnerships with European allies. Germany’s role in supporting Ukraine has grown steadily, particularly in the fields of air defence and industrial collaboration.

Energy Security Remains a Priority

Beyond military assistance, Zelenskyy highlighted the urgent need for additional energy support. He announced that further meetings are scheduled in the coming week to discuss new energy packages aimed at repairing damage from recent strikes and securing essential equipment.

Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has been repeatedly targeted during the conflict, especially during colder months. Officials have warned that low temperatures can compound the humanitarian impact of attacks on power and heating systems.

Zelenskyy urged citizens to remain vigilant as colder days approach, noting that Russia has previously intensified strikes during harsh weather conditions. He called on the public to follow air raid warnings and prioritise safety measures.

Broader International Context

The developments come as diplomatic efforts continue on multiple fronts. A trilateral meeting involving representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States is scheduled to take place in Geneva on February 17–18. While expectations remain cautious, the talks are seen as part of ongoing attempts to manage tensions and explore possible pathways forward.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has announced a new air defence assistance package valued at more than 500 million euros. The funding is expected to further strengthen Ukraine’s capacity to respond to aerial threats.

As the conflict enters another critical phase, Kyiv is intensifying its engagement with international partners. With air defence systems, drone production, and energy resilience at the forefront, Ukrainian officials are seeking to reinforce both immediate security and long-term stability.
