Heritage – Historic Gurajada Apparao Residence Set for Major Restoration in Vizianagaram
Heritage – The ancestral home of celebrated Telugu literary figure Gurajada Apparao in Vizianagaram is set to undergo extensive restoration, with Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan announcing plans to modernize the historic property and build a modern auditorium nearby. The proposed development, estimated at around Rs 1.20 crore, aims to preserve the legacy of one of the most influential figures in Telugu literature while creating improved facilities for cultural and educational activities.

Government Moves Ahead With Restoration Project
The Andhra Pradesh government has already begun renovation work on the nearly 150-year-old residence. Officials have allocated approximately Rs 12.05 lakh for the restoration of the heritage structure. Alongside the physical renovation, efforts are underway to preserve Gurajada Apparao’s literary contributions through digitization. The Department of Archaeology has started converting his writings into digital formats to ensure they remain accessible to future generations.
Authorities are also expected to issue a Government Order shortly for the construction of the planned auditorium on adjacent vacant land. The announcement has been welcomed by literary organizations, historians, and local residents who have long sought better preservation of the landmark.
Legacy of a Literary Pioneer
Gurajada Venkata Apparao remains one of the most respected names in Telugu literature and theatre. His landmark play “Kanyasulkam,” first written in 1892, is widely regarded as a milestone in Telugu drama and social commentary.
Although he was born in the Visakhapatnam region, Gurajada spent much of his life in Vizianagaram, where he became closely associated with the city’s cultural and intellectual identity. His influence continues to be recognized more than a century after his death in 1915.
Valuable Historical Items Still Preserved
Several personal belongings connected to Gurajada Apparao continue to be housed at the residence. These include his spectacles, a rubber stamp, a brass knife, a teakwood table brought from Rangoon, chairs, and imported oil paintings. These artefacts provide a rare glimpse into the life of the renowned writer and hold considerable historical value.
The preservation of these items has become a key focus of the ongoing restoration initiative, which seeks to transform the site into a more meaningful cultural destination.
Longstanding Efforts to Protect the Site
Attempts to conserve the property date back several years. In 2012, funding was approved for converting the residence into a museum during a cultural event in Vizianagaram. However, the proposed development did not progress as expected.
Later, the TDP-led NDA government recognized the building’s historical and archaeological significance and declared it a protected monument. In 2015, the Department of Archaeology formally assumed responsibility for the structure.
While limited renovation work was carried out in a few sections of the building, much of the property remained neglected and deteriorated over time.
Concerns Over Neglect Prompted Fresh Action
A small library currently functions from part of the residence under the supervision of Gurajada Apparao’s great-grandson, Venkateswara Prasad, and his wife Indira. However, inadequate maintenance and poor sanitation in the surrounding area created difficulties for visitors, particularly students who use the library.
Local residents also raised concerns about unauthorized entry through nearby vacant land. Incidents involving damage to books and furniture reportedly highlighted the urgent need for stronger protection and restoration measures.
The issue gained renewed attention after members of the Janasena Party highlighted the deteriorating condition of the heritage property during a meeting in Visakhapatnam in August 2025. Responding to those concerns, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan pledged to restore the landmark and preserve Gurajada Apparao’s literary works through digitization. The latest renovation initiative marks a significant step toward fulfilling that commitment and safeguarding an important chapter of Andhra Pradesh’s cultural heritage.
