Environment – Andhra Government Orders Action Over Godavari River Pollution Concerns

Environment –  The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated action against agencies linked to pollution in the Godavari River after a review of recent environmental assessment reports. Deputy Chief Minister and Forest, Science and Technology Minister K. Pawan Kalyan on Monday directed the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) to issue show-cause notices to Andhra Paper Mills and the Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation over alleged lapses related to river pollution.

Andhra action on godavari pollution

The decision followed a detailed review of pollution-control efforts based on findings submitted by the APPCB. The report was prepared after the Deputy Chief Minister recently visited Rajamahendravaram and conducted an on-ground inspection of conditions along the Godavari River.

Assessment Reveals Elevated Pollution Levels

During the field visit, officials collected water samples from multiple points along the river. These samples were later examined in accredited laboratories to determine the quality of water and identify potential contaminants.

The results were presented during a review meeting attended by district-level officials. According to the assessment, the river contains chemical pollutants at levels higher than the limits permitted under environmental regulations. The findings raised concerns about the effectiveness of existing monitoring and pollution-control mechanisms.

Questions Raised Over Monitoring Practices

Expressing concern over the report, Pawan Kalyan sought clarification from officials regarding the continued presence of pollution despite routine water-quality surveillance. Officials informed the meeting that water samples have been collected and tested every month as part of the monitoring process.

The Deputy Chief Minister questioned why corrective measures had not produced better results if pollution indicators had been regularly identified through testing. He stressed that monitoring alone was not sufficient and that stronger enforcement measures were required to address the problem.

Notices Ordered for Industries and Civic Body

Following the discussion, Pawan Kalyan instructed APPCB officials to immediately issue show-cause notices to Andhra Paper Mills and other industrial units found responsible for releasing pollutants in violation of environmental norms.

He also ordered action against the Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation, directing officials to hold the civic body accountable for shortcomings in overseeing pollution-control measures and ensuring compliance with environmental standards.

Focus on Environmental Protection

The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized the need for strict implementation of pollution-control regulations and continuous supervision of activities affecting the river. He said preventing further degradation of the Godavari ecosystem should remain a priority for all departments involved in environmental management.

Officials were also directed to strengthen coordination among relevant agencies so that pollution-related concerns can be addressed more effectively and long-term solutions can be implemented.

Preparations Ahead of Godavari Pushkaralu

Special attention was given to preparations for the upcoming Godavari Pushkaralu. Pawan Kalyan instructed officials to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to maintain a clean and safe river environment during the religious event.

He noted that protecting the ecological health of the Godavari is essential and called for sustained efforts to improve water quality before the festival. The government expects concerned departments to work together to safeguard the river and provide a pollution-free environment for devotees and local communities.
