DefenceDeals – US Clears Major Military Support Agreements for India
DefenceDeals – The United States has approved two major defence support agreements for India involving Apache attack helicopters and M777 ultra-light howitzers, with the combined value of the proposed deals crossing USD 428 million. The move reflects growing military cooperation between Washington and New Delhi as both countries continue to deepen strategic ties in the Indo-Pacific region.
Apache Helicopter Support Package Approved
According to the US State Department, the proposed Apache-related agreement is valued at nearly USD 198.2 million. The package focuses on long-term sustainment and operational support for India’s AH-64E Apache combat helicopters already in service with the Indian armed forces.
The support arrangement includes engineering assistance, logistics coordination, technical documentation, training programs, and maintenance-related services. The agreement also covers support from both the US government and defence contractors to ensure continued operational readiness of the helicopter fleet.
American aerospace firms Boeing and Lockheed Martin will serve as the primary contractors for the Apache support package.
M777 Howitzer Maintenance Agreement
In a separate approval, the US government cleared another defence support proposal worth approximately USD 230 million for India’s M777A2 ultra-light howitzers. These artillery systems are already deployed by the Indian Army in several strategic sectors, including mountainous border regions.
The package includes spare components, repair services, technical assistance, field-level support, training activities, and logistics coordination. The agreement is designed to maintain the operational efficiency of the artillery systems over an extended period.
British defence manufacturer BAE Systems has been identified as the lead contractor for this support arrangement.
Focus on Strategic Partnership
The US State Department stated that the proposed agreements are intended to strengthen the broader strategic relationship between the two countries. Officials noted that India remains an important defence partner in South Asia and the Indo-Pacific region, where geopolitical competition and security concerns continue to grow.
Washington also said the support packages would help India improve its preparedness against emerging regional threats while strengthening homeland defence capabilities. The statement added that India possesses the necessary infrastructure and operational experience to integrate the services and equipment into its armed forces without difficulty.
Apache Helicopters Demonstrated During Army Exercise
The approval comes weeks after the Indian Army showcased the operational capabilities of its Apache helicopters during a live-fire military exercise conducted at the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan.
During the exercise, named Brahmastra, Apache helicopters carried out precision strikes against simulated battlefield targets using Hellfire missiles, rockets, and onboard weapon systems. The drill focused on testing combat coordination between pilots and ground units under operational conditions.
Military officials described the exercise as part of the Army’s ongoing efforts to strengthen network-centric and precision warfare capabilities.
Advanced Features of Apache Combat Helicopters
The AH-64 Apache is widely regarded as one of the world’s most advanced attack helicopters. It is equipped with a 30 mm automatic chain gun and can deploy anti-tank missiles as well as guided rockets during combat operations.
The helicopter also includes sophisticated targeting and surveillance systems such as Longbow radar technology and advanced night-vision sensors. These features allow the aircraft to operate effectively in challenging weather conditions and during night missions.
India has continued expanding its military modernization programs in recent years, focusing on rapid mobility, advanced surveillance, precision strike capability, and improved battlefield coordination. Defence analysts view the latest US approvals as another step in the growing military partnership between the two democracies.
